Coastal Climate Control FX-1 Retro-Fit Manual

The Coastal Climate Control FX-1 kit consists of 3 items. The Display Head (3 3/4" square) that replaces the old control, an Electronic Power Module (8 1/2" x 7" x 3") that houses the circuit board, and a phone-type, plug-in Display Cable (15' standard) that connects the Display Head & Electronic Power Module together.

The Display Head has a temperature sensor embedded in the face plate, that senses the cabin temperature wherever it is mounted. Most of the old manual controls use a capillary sensing tube that is mounted in the path of the return-air to the unit or evaporator, which is no longer used when replaced with the FX-1. This capillary tube is of a fixed length and many, old manual controls are to be found in awkward places, especially in fwd & aft cabins.

The Display Head should ideally be mounted at mid height in the cabin where it will sense the temperature correctly and be easy to operate. Try to avoid a location where the Display Head will be heated or cooled by the conditioned air; either by being mounted in a plenum (with conditioned air flowing over the back of the Display Head), or by mounting it in the direct air stream from a discharge grill. If the above conditions cannot be met, or problems arise that cause incorrect air sensing, install an Alternate Air Sensor (15' standard) that simply plugs into the 'Alt Air' jack on the circuit board. This will disarm the sensor on the Display Head & the Alternate Air Sensor can then be mounted in the return-air path.

If you are mounting the Display Head in a new location, this leaves you with a choice of leaving the old control in place, or removing it and covering the hole with something more pleasing to the eye. If you choose to mount the Display Head in the same location as the old control you can use the precut black plastic Mounting Plate, or locally obtain material to match or compliment your decor.

The Electronic Power Module contains a circuit board with a terminal strip, and the wires that were connected to the old control need to diverted onto the terminal strip (specific instructions for Cruisair, Marine Air & Lunaire will be included with the purchase of the fx-1, guides for other manufacturers are also available). This means that the Electronic Power Module can be mounted anywhere on the route of the cable from the air conditioning unit and the old control. It can be mounted in any orientation and needs access only for installation & troubleshooting. In most retrofit applications there is no wiring to be done at the air conditioning unit itself for the basic installation.

The Display Cable plugs into the 'DISPLAY' jack on the circuit board & into the jack on the rear of the Display Head. This is 15' standard, but lengths of 25' & 30' are available.
